When God is your shepherd, you can rest. Nothing essential is lacking. Nothing of care is missing. Nothing of presence is absent.
Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved texts in all of Scripture. David, who was a shepherd before he was a king, uses the image of the shepherd and his sheep to describe God's relationship with His people. When we say "the LORD is my shepherd," we are acknowledging that we are not self-sufficient. The word "shepherd" in Hebrew is ra-ah, implying active care, constant guidance and daily provision. "I shall not want" is not a promise of material prosperity, but the certainty that everything we truly need, God provides.
