Tiago 2— comparação

1Meus irmãos, não guardem a fé em nosso glorioso Senhor Jesus Cristo com acepção de pessoas.

2Pois, se entrar na sinagoga de vocês, um homem com anel de ouro e roupas finas, e também entrar um homem pobre com roupas sujas,

3e vocês derem atenção especial àquele que veste roupas finas e disserem: “Sente-se aqui em um bom lugar”; e disserem ao pobre: “Fique em pé ali”, ou “Sente-se perto do estrado dos meus pés”,

4vocês não fizeram discriminação entre si mesmos e se tornaram juízes com maus pensamentos?

5Ouçam, meus amados irmãos. Não escolheu Deus os que são pobres neste mundo para serem ricos na fé e herdeiros do Reino que ele prometeu aos que o amam?

6Mas vocês desonraram o pobre. Não são os ricos que oprimem vocês e pessoalmente os arrastam para os tribunais?

7Não são eles que blasfemam o honroso nome pelo qual vocês são chamados?

8Contudo, se vocês cumprem a lei real segundo a Escritura: “Amarás o teu próximo como a ti mesmo”, vocês fazem bem.

9Mas se vocês fazem acepção de pessoas, cometem pecado, sendo condenados pela lei como transgressores.

10Pois qualquer que guardar toda a lei, mas tropeçar em um só ponto, tornou-se culpado de todos.

11Pois aquele que disse: “Não cometerás adultério”, também disse: “Não cometerás assassinato.” Ora, se você não comete adultério, mas comete assassinato, tornou-se transgressor da lei.

12Falem e ajam como pessoas que serão julgadas pela lei da liberdade.

13Pois o juízo é sem misericórdia para com aquele que não usou de misericórdia. A misericórdia triunfa sobre o juízo.

14De que adianta, meus irmãos, se alguém disser que tem fé, mas não tiver obras? Pode essa fé salvá-lo?

15E se um irmão ou irmã estiver nu e com falta do alimento diário,

16e um de vocês lhes disser: “Vão em paz. Aqueçam-se e alimentem-se”; contudo não lhes derem as coisas que o corpo necessita, de que adianta isso?

17Assim também a fé, se não tiver obras, é morta em si mesma.

18Mas alguém dirá: “Você tem fé, e eu tenho obras.” Mostre-me a sua fé sem as obras, e eu lhe mostrarei a minha fé pelas minhas obras.

19Você crê que Deus é um só. Você faz bem. Os demônios também creem — e tremem.

20Mas você quer saber, homem vão, que a fé sem as obras é morta?

21Não foi nosso pai Abraão justificado pelas obras, quando ofereceu seu filho Isaque sobre o altar?

22Você vê que a fé cooperou com as suas obras, e pelas obras a fé foi aperfeiçoada.

23Assim se cumpriu a Escritura que diz: “Abraão creu em Deus, e isso lhe foi imputado como justiça”, e ele foi chamado amigo de Deus.

24Vocês veem, então, que pelas obras o homem é justificado, e não somente pela fé.

25Da mesma forma, não foi também a prostituta Raabe justificada pelas obras, quando recebeu os mensageiros e os enviou por outro caminho?

26Pois, assim como o corpo sem o espírito está morto, assim também a fé sem as obras está morta.

1My brothers, don’t hold the faith of our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with partiality.

2For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue, and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in,

3and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing and say, “Sit here in a good place;” and you tell the poor man, “Stand there,” or “Sit by my footstool”

4haven’t you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

5Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn’t God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?

6But you have dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you and personally drag you before the courts?

7Don’t they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?

8However, if you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well.

9But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.

10For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

11For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

12So speak and so do as men who are to be judged by the law of freedom.

13For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

14What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?

15And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food,

16and one of you tells them, “Go in peace. Be warmed and filled;” yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?

17Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.

18Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

19You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe—and shudder.

20But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?

21Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?

22You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected.

23So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God.

24You see then that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.

25In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

26For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
