1 Samuel 25— comparação

1Samuel morreu; e todo o Israel se reuniu e chorou por ele, e o sepultaram em sua casa, em Ramá.

2Havia um homem em Maom que tinha as suas propriedades no Carmelo; e o homem era muito rico. Ele tinha três mil ovelhas e mil cabras; e estava tosquiando as suas ovelhas no Carmelo.

3Ora, o nome do homem era Nabal, e o nome da sua mulher era Abigail. Esta mulher era inteligente e muito formosa; mas o homem era rude e mau em suas ações. Ele era da linhagem de Calebe.

4Davi ouviu no deserto que Nabal estava tosquiando as suas ovelhas.

5Davi enviou dez rapazes, e Davi disse aos jovens: “Subam ao Carmelo, vão a Nabal e saúdem-no em meu nome.

6E digam a ele: ‘Longa vida para o senhor! Paz seja com o senhor! Paz seja com a sua casa! Paz seja com tudo o que é seu!

7Agora ouvi dizer que o senhor tem tosquiadores. Os seus pastores estiveram conosco, e nós não lhes fizemos mal algum. Nada lhes faltou durante todo o tempo em que estiveram no Carmelo.

8Pergunte aos seus próprios rapazes, e eles lhe dirão. Portanto, que estes rapazes encontrem favor aos seus olhos, pois chegamos em um dia de festa. Por favor, dê o que houver à mão aos seus servos e ao seu filho Davi.’”

9Quando os rapazes de Davi chegaram, disseram a Nabal todas essas palavras em nome de Davi, e esperaram.

10Mas Nabal respondeu aos servos de Davi e disse: “Quem é Davi? Quem é o filho de Jessé? Hoje em dia há muitos escravos que fogem dos seus senhores.

11Pegaria eu, pois, o meu pão, a minha água e a carne que abati para os meus tosquiadores, e daria a homens que nem sei de onde vêm?”

12Então os rapazes de Davi deram meia-volta, retornaram e foram contar a Davi todas essas palavras.

13Davi disse aos seus homens: “Cada um cinja a sua espada!”

14Mas um dos jovens servos avisou Abigail, mulher de Nabal, dizendo: “Eis que Davi enviou mensageiros do deserto para saudar o nosso senhor; mas ele os insultou.

15No entanto, aqueles homens foram muito bons para nós, e não sofremos nenhum mal, e não demos falta de nada durante todo o tempo em que convivemos com eles, enquanto estávamos nos campos.

16Eles foram como um muro para nós, tanto de dia como de noite, durante todo o tempo em que estivemos com eles cuidando das ovelhas.

17Agora, pois, reconheça isso e veja o que a senhora pode fazer; pois o mal já está determinado contra o nosso senhor e contra toda a sua casa. Ele é um homem tão perverso que não se pode nem falar com ele.”

18Então Abigail se apressou e pegou duzentos pães, dois odres de vinho, cinco ovelhas preparadas, cinco seás de grãos tostados, cem cachos de passas e duzentos bolos de figos, e os colocou sobre jumentos.

19E ela disse aos seus servos: “Vão adiante de mim. Eis que irei logo atrás de vocês.” Mas ela não contou nada ao seu marido, Nabal.

20Enquanto ela cavalgava no seu jumento, descendo encoberta pela montanha, eis que Davi e os seus homens desciam na direção dela, e ela os encontrou.

21Ora, Davi tinha dito: “De nada adiantou eu ter protegido tudo o que esse sujeito tem no deserto, de modo que não se perdeu nada de tudo o que lhe pertencia. Ele me pagou o bem com o mal.

22Que Deus castigue os inimigos de Davi com severidade, e ainda mais, se até o amanhecer eu deixar vivo um só que urine na parede de todos os que lhe pertencem.”

23Quando Abigail viu Davi, ela desceu depressa do jumento, prostrou-se diante de Davi com o rosto em terra e se curvou.

24Ela caiu aos pés dele e disse: “Sobre mim, meu senhor, caia a culpa! Por favor, deixe a sua serva falar aos seus ouvidos. Ouça as palavras da sua serva.

25Por favor, que o meu senhor não dê atenção a este homem perverso, Nabal, pois ele é exatamente o que o seu nome significa. Nabal é o seu nome, e a insensatez está com ele; mas eu, a sua serva, não vi os rapazes que o meu senhor enviou.

26Agora, pois, meu senhor, tão certo como vive o SENHOR e tão certo como vive a sua alma, já que o SENHOR o impediu de derramar sangue e de se vingar com as próprias mãos, que os seus inimigos e todos os que procuram fazer o mal ao meu senhor sejam como Nabal.

27E agora que este presente, que a sua serva trouxe ao meu senhor, seja dado aos jovens que seguem o meu senhor.

28Por favor, perdoe a ofensa da sua serva. Certamente o SENHOR fará uma casa duradoura para o meu senhor, porque o meu senhor luta as batalhas do SENHOR. Nenhum mal será achado no senhor em todos os seus dias.

29Mesmo que alguém se levante para persegui-lo e procurar tirar-lhe a vida, a vida do meu senhor estará guardada no feixe dos vivos com o SENHOR, o seu Deus. Mas a vida dos seus inimigos ele atirará para longe, como da cavidade de uma funda.

30E quando o SENHOR tiver feito ao meu senhor todo o bem que prometeu a seu respeito, e o tiver estabelecido como líder sobre Israel,

31o meu senhor não terá este peso na consciência nem o remorso de ter derramado sangue sem motivo, ou de ter se vingado com as próprias mãos. E quando o SENHOR abençoar o meu senhor, lembre-se da sua serva.”

32Davi disse a Abigail: “Bendito seja o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel, que hoje a enviou ao meu encontro!

33Bendito seja o seu bom senso, e bendita seja você, que hoje me impediu de derramar sangue e de me vingar com as próprias mãos.

34Pois, tão certo como vive o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel, que me impediu de lhe fazer mal, se você não tivesse se apressado em vir ao meu encontro, certamente até o raiar do dia não teria sobrado a Nabal um só que urine na parede.”

35Então Davi aceitou das mãos dela o que lhe havia trazido e disse-lhe: “Suba em paz para a sua casa. Veja, ouvi a sua voz e atendi ao seu pedido.”

36Quando Abigail voltou para Nabal, eis que ele estava dando um banquete em sua casa, como um banquete de rei. O coração de Nabal estava alegre, pois ele estava muito bêbado. Por isso ela não lhe contou nada até o raiar do dia.

37De manhã, quando os efeitos do vinho já haviam passado, a sua mulher lhe contou todas essas coisas; e o coração dele morreu dentro dele, e ele ficou como uma pedra.

38Cerca de dez dias depois, o SENHOR feriu Nabal, e ele morreu.

39Quando Davi ouviu que Nabal estava morto, disse: “Bendito seja o SENHOR, que defendeu a minha causa contra a afronta que recebi de Nabal, e guardou o seu servo de fazer o mal. O SENHOR fez a maldade de Nabal cair sobre a própria cabeça dele.”

40Os servos de Davi foram até Abigail, no Carmelo, e lhe disseram: “Davi nos enviou para levá-la a ele, para ser a sua mulher.”

41Ela se levantou, curvou-se com o rosto em terra e disse: “Eis que a sua serva aqui está para servir e lavar os pés dos servos do meu senhor.”

42Abigail levantou-se depressa e montou num jumento, acompanhada por cinco de suas servas; e ela seguiu os mensageiros de Davi, e tornou-se a sua mulher.

43Davi também tomou Ainoã, de Jezreel; e ambas se tornaram suas mulheres.

44Ora, Saul havia dado a sua filha Mical, mulher de Davi, a Palti, filho de Laís, que era de Galim.

1Samuel died; and all Israel gathered themselves together and mourned for him, and buried him at his house at Ramah. Then David arose and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

2There was a man in Maon whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great. He had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats; and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

3Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail. This woman was intelligent and had a beautiful face; but the man was surly and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb.

4David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.

5David sent ten young men; and David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name.

6Tell him, ‘Long life to you! Peace be to you! Peace be to your house! Peace be to all that you have!

7Now I have heard that you have shearers. Your shepherds have now been with us, and we didn’t harm them. Nothing was missing from them all the time they were in Carmel.

8Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let the young men find favor in your eyes, for we come on a good day. Please give whatever comes to your hand to your servants and to your son David.’”

9When David’s young men came, they spoke to Nabal all those words in the name of David, and waited.

10Nabal answered David’s servants and said, “Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants who break away from their masters these days.

11Shall I then take my bread, my water, and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men who I don’t know where they come from?”

12So David’s young men turned on their way and went back, and came and told him all these words.

13David said to his men, “Every man put on his sword!” Every man put on his sword. David also put on his sword. About four hundred men followed David, and two hundred stayed by the baggage.

14But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, “Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master; and he insulted them.

15But the men were very good to us, and we were not harmed, and we didn’t miss anything as long as we went with them, when we were in the fields.

16They were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.

17Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master and against all his house, for he is such a worthless fellow that one can’t speak to him.”

18Then Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves of bread, two containers of wine, five sheep ready dressed, five seahs of parched grain, one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys.

19She said to her young men, “Go on before me. Behold, I am coming after you.” But she didn’t tell her husband, Nabal.

20As she rode on her donkey, and came down hidden by the mountain, behold, David and his men came down toward her, and she met them.

21Now David had said, “Surely in vain I have kept all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained to him. He has returned me evil for good.

22God do so to the enemies of David, and more also, if I leave of all that belongs to him by the morning light so much as one who urinates on a wall.”

23When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got off her donkey, and fell before David on her face and bowed herself to the ground.

24She fell at his feet and said, “On me, my lord, on me be the blame! Please let your servant speak in your ears. Hear the words of your servant.

25Please don’t let my lord pay attention to this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal is his name, and folly is with him; but I, your servant, didn’t see my lord’s young men whom you sent.

26Now therefore, my lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, since Yahweh has withheld you from blood guiltiness and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now therefore let your enemies and those who seek evil to my lord be as Nabal.

27Now this present which your servant has brought to my lord, let it be given to the young men who follow my lord.

28Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For Yahweh will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fights Yahweh’s battles. Evil will not be found in you all your days.

29Though men may rise up to pursue you and to seek your soul, yet the soul of my lord will be bound in the bundle of life with Yahweh your God. He will sling out the souls of your enemies as from a sling’s pocket.

30It will come to pass, when Yahweh has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and has appointed you prince over Israel,

31that this shall be no grief to you, nor offense of heart to my lord, either that you have shed blood without cause, or that my lord has avenged himself. When Yahweh has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.”

32David said to Abigail, “Blessed is Yahweh, the God of Israel, who sent you today to meet me!

33Blessed is your discretion, and blessed are you, who have kept me today from blood guiltiness, and from avenging myself with my own hand.

34For indeed, as Yahweh the God of Israel lives, who has withheld me from harming you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely there wouldn’t have been left to Nabal by the morning light so much as one who urinates on a wall.”

35So David received from her hand that which she had brought him. Then he said to her, “Go up in peace to your house. Behold, I have listened to your voice and have granted your request.”

36Abigail came to Nabal; and behold, he held a feast in his house like the feast of a king. Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. Therefore she told him nothing until the morning light.

37In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things; and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

38About ten days later, Yahweh struck Nabal, so that he died.

39When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed is Yahweh, who has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from evil. Yahweh has returned the evildoing of Nabal on his own head.” David sent and spoke concerning Abigail, to take her to himself as wife.

40When David’s servants had come to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, “David has sent us to you, to take you to him as wife.”

41She arose and bowed herself with her face to the earth, and said, “Behold, your servant is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.”

42Abigail hurriedly arose and rode on a donkey with her five maids who followed her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

43David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they both became his wives.

44Now Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.
